WEST COVINA >> Tiare Tuitama is once again working her magic.

The longtime respected girls volleyball coach that helped turn La Salle High School into one of the most respected girls volleyball programs in Southern California, is now trying to do the same thing at South Hills.

If Saturday’s 25-21, 18-25, 25-17, 25-22 home win over Don Lugo in a CIF Southern Section Division 6 second-round match is any indication, the Huskies are heading in the right direction. The Huskies will have a road quarterfinal match on Wednesday against West Valley. The Mustangs swept host Katella, 3-0.

In the eyes of Tuitama, the path to restoring a program that was once considered one of the top programs in the area under the guidance of Charm Doyle is not an easy one.

In her days at La Salle, a match like Saturday’s would have brought out a capacity crowd with relentless energy. Saturday’s match had a crowd that was far from those numbers. However, she knows that it will take time before the program will gain the notoriety that the softball and baseball teams currently enjoy.

“It’s not so much hard as it is different,” Tuitama said. “I was happy that we got a bit of a crowd at the end of the match and they were super supportive.”

The Huskies (17-7) were led by outside hitter Mia Delahoussaye. The 6-foot 2-inch junior was easily the best player on the court and finished the game with a team-high 25 kills.

“It was a really fun match to play and I’m excited to move onto the next round,” Delahoussaye said. “No matter what, I’m going to try and play my game and do the best that I can. I find that very exciting.”

For Tuitama, the challenge is developing different schemes to make sure that Delhousssaye is not consistently double-teamed at the net.

“She is our go-to player in the clutch moments and we were very fortunate to have her in the front row (in the fourth set),” Tuitama said. “If she was in the back row, we might have been forced to play in a fifth set. When she is getting the kills, it sets it up for the other girls.”

And those girls included middle blocker Mia Moore and right side hitter Payton Wright. Wright played a huge role in the third set with four well-timed kills and two aces. Moore delivered a clutch effort in the final set with four kills, complementing Delahoussaye’s dominating nine kills performance.

“They’re playing well at the net, being super aggressive you need that middle player,” Tuitama said. “Middles are always overlooked, as well as the outsides, but the reason why Mia is successful on the outside is that (Moore) does her job in the middle.”

Don Lugo (12-4) was led by talented freshman Morgan Graves with 11 kills and senior Elizabeth Ortiz with 12 kills.
